Earlier this year, Apple released a new version of AirPort Utility, the application that allows users to set up and maintain the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express base stations. The updated version, AirPort Utility 6.0, was supposed to streamline the interface and make it easier to set up networks. The only problem was that a number of advanced features went missing.
New version of AirPort Utility 5.6.1 launcher for Mavericks. This version doesn't require the modification of the AirPort Utility itself. It is a stand-alone app that will launch AirPort Utility 5.6.1.

If you’ve been missing the features in the old AirPort Utility application, we have good news: There’s a way to install it in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Apple’s official installer won’t work, but with the help of a free Automator workflow, you can extract AirPort Utility 5.6.1 and use it on your Mac.
- Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 from Apple’s website. Download this Automator workflow. And if you’re feeling generous, please consider making a donation to the awesome dude who created said workflow. Drag and drop the AirPort Utility 5.6.1 installer on to the Automator workflow, as shown below.
- The Launcher is a small utility for macOS/OS X (compatible versions listed, supra). Using the Launcher, it is possible to run AirPort Utility v5.6.1 under versions of macOS/OS X that would otherwise reject the application. This older version of AirPort Utility is.
Here’s how to install the old AirPort Utility (5.6.1) in OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion:
Download AirPort Utility 5.6.1 from Apple’s website.
Download this Automator workflow. And if you’re feeling generous, please consider making a donation to the awesome dude who created said workflow.
Drag and drop the AirPort Utility 5.6.1 installer on to the Automator workflow, as shown below.
Wait about a minute or so for the Automator workflow to finish extracting the application from the installer. When the AirPort Utility appears on your Desktop, the Automator workflow is finished.
Rename the AirPort Utility to Old AirPort Utility, or something similar. You now have two different versions of the AirPort Utility on your computer, and you’ll need a way to differentiate them.
Drag the Old AirPort Utility icon to the Applications folder.
Double click Old AirPort Utility to launch it. The application appears, as shown below.
That’s it! Now you can start administrating AirPort base stations just like before.

Hi Folks,
I recently bought an old AirPort Express (A1088) on ebay for 20 Euros. These thingies are still a good working WiFi router and they support WPA2. However thanks to Apples policy “Do not support Hardware that is older than 5 years” it is not possible to configure it on a modern Mac because the Airport Utility does not support this hardware anymore. Thanks again Apple.

But Dr. Sven found out how to do it and here is the description. I found most parts of it here
Airport Utility 5.6 1 Windows Download
- Reset the AirPort Express. While it’s plugged in, hold the reset button until the light starts flashing fast (about 10–20 seconds) then let go. After that the password – if you are asked – is “public”
- Connect the AirPort Express to your computer with a LAN cable (configuring it wireless didn’t work for me)
- Download this old version of the AirPort Utility 5.6.1 with an AppleScript that allows it to launch on macOS Sierra, and launch the dmg.
- Drag AirPort Utility 5.6.1 into your /Applications/Utilities/ folder. You will need to enter your administrator password.
- Next, after you’ve dragged AirPort Utility 5.6.1 into the Utilities folder, drag AirPort Utility 5.6.1 Launcher into your /Applications/Utilities/ folder. You may need to enter your administrator password again. It’s important to do steps 3 and 4 separately instead of dragging both into the folder at once — otherwise, you’ll most likely get an error message. This is the biggest area people run into problems with my guide.
- Open AirPort Utility 5.6.1 Launcher package (ctrl. + klick and then show packe content). Then click through contents and MacOS and there you see the file “applet”. Double klick it. You may need to open Security & Privacy in System Preferences to approve this, if you get a message about the app being from an unauthorized developer. Now that the AirPort Utility is open you should be able to edit everything and it is all good.
After this you should be able to connect to your AirPort Express wireless too 🙂
