New & Teen Drivers

In Kansas, you must be at least 14 years of age and either pass a written test OR present certificate of completion from a driver education program to apply for an instruction permit. You must be at least 15 years of age and have completed driver education to apply for a restricted driver’s license. You must be at least 16 years of age, have held an instruction permit for at least a year, have completed a 50-hour affidavit, and pass the written and road tests OR present a certificate of completion from driver education to apply for a less-restricted driver license. You must be at least 17 years of age, complete a 50-hour affidavit, and either pass the written and road tests OR present a certificate of completion from driver education to apply for a non-restricted driver’s license. If you are at least 18 years of age, you are not required to complete a 50-hour affidavit to apply for a non-restricted driver license.

Who has to take the written test?

Anyone who is getting their driver's license for the first time must pass the written test. The minimum age to obtain a non-restricted driver's license in Kansas is 16, provided you have 50 or more hours of logged driving experience. If they're under 17 years of age, they will also need parental consent.
